Contract Canvasser

Position Description

Organization: Propel ATL

Job Title: Canvasser

Reports to: Advocacy Team

Job Type: Contract

Hours/Compensation: 10 hours/week, $20/hour

Location: Various locations. Candidates must reside within the MARTA service area at the time of employment.

Start/End Date: February 2024 - July 2024

Make a direct impact on transit in Atlanta with Propel ATL, a leading voice in transportation advocacy. Propel ATL, formerly the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and PEDS, helped establish the Atlanta Transit Coalition in 2021.

We are committed to building a transportation system that ensures access to opportunity through investments that repair the harmful effects of institutional racism and foster an inclusive community. We’re looking for a community-minded individual who supports transportation equity, demonstrates enthusiasm for Propel’s mission and vision, and is committed to our guiding principles – particularly those related to social and racial justice.

As a paid canvasser, you will engage with bus riders by collecting feedback on their transit experiences, sharing information about the Transit Coalition and our work, and strengthening stakeholder relationships.

This job is for you if you're available for immediate hire. You like being outside, in busy areas, at different sites. You enjoy meeting, interacting, and sharing information with new people. You are good at documenting interactions.

Position Summary
Guided by the big-picture goals of our strategic plan, as a canvasser, you will play a crucial role in surveying bus riders about the transit coalition's 2024 priorities. The insights collected will steer our campaigns, influence communication strategies, and influence the upcoming bus network redesign to align with community needs. The role will last from February to July.

Primary Responsibilities
- Represent Propel ATL in engagement with stakeholders about our transit initiatives.
- Collect survey responses and bus rider feedback
- Communicate ideas, priorities, challenges, concerns, and other feedback expressed by stakeholders, ensuring our advocacy remains aligned with community needs and sentiments.
- Keep accurate records of interactions, feedback, and potential leads for further engagement or support.
- Distribute information and promotional material.
- Regularly attend group and individual training sessions to stay updated on Propel ATL's strategic objectives, outreach strategies, and engagement principles.

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE
- Has customer service or sales experience
- Is practiced at engaging with stakeholders in non-traditional settings
- Has previously worked outdoors and at multiple sites

KNOWLEDGE
-Proficient in basic computer skills
- Willing to train in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software
- Recognizes and understands Atlanta’s history - especially its racial disparities and record of “intentional harm perpetrated by white supremacist policies and actions”

Additional desired attributes
- Canvassing experience
- Is current on transit issues, especially their local context
- Transportation advocacy experience
- Understands why transit access is key to advancing equity and growth in the city
- Fluency in a second language prevalent in metro Atlanta, such as Spanish or Vietnamese

Workplace Format
Travel: Must be able to travel to assigned locations.
Hybrid: requires in-person engagements and virtual meetings. Some evenings and weekends are required as necessary for the position's responsibilities.
Physical requirements for this position: Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. occasionally and up to 10 lbs. frequently to move objects. Must have physical stamina to be outside, moving around for long periods of time.
